Reading Challenge – September 2015 – Result!

At the start of September I posted a list of books I decided I would try to read in order to try to catch up to my Goodreads challenge – and also get through books I needed to read for Aurealis judging or review work. Each day I posted to the tumblr blog to record daily progress, and here I’ll make general comments also.

Originally my list was as follows, each book that I managed to finish is crossed out:

For judging:

  • Besieged (The Outcast Chronicles, #1) by Rowena Cory Daniells
  • Exile (The Outcast Chronicles, #2) by Rowena Cory Daniells
  • Sanctuary (The Outcast Chronicles, #3) by Rowena Cory Daniells
  • The Last Stormlord (Stormlord #1) by Glenda Larke
  • Stormlord Rising (Stormlord #2) by Glenda Larke
  • Stormlord’s Exile (Stormlord #3) by Glenda Larke
  • Blaze of Glory (The Laws of Magic #1) by Michael Pryor

For review:

  • The Beast’s Garden by Kate Forsyth
  • Led Astray by Kelley Armstrong

For fun:

  • Angel of Storms (Millennium’s Rule #2) by Trudi Canavan – So I swear somewhere it said it would be out September. Now I look again and it says November! Curses!
  • Fallout by Gwenda Bond
  • Forever Red by Margaret Stohl
  • Fans of the Impossible Life by Kate Scelsa

For fun non-fiction:

  • James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon by Julie Phillips
  • An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield
  • Let the Land Speak: A History of Australia by Jackie French – Challenge was to go to 50%, I got to: 50%! Woo!

~

In addition I also read:

  • Shaler’s Fish by Helen Macdonald
  • Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
  • Compound a Felony by Elinor Gray
  • Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
  • Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

All in all the reading challenge got me to do a lot more reading – I was actively finding every moment I could to read again. On the other hand, I didn’t enjoy many of the books I was supposed to read for fun – I’m not sure if that means I should have only read books for judging as it didn’t seem to change my views on those – I still enjoyed reading them as it had the added bonus of Getting Stuff Done.

I wish I could have finished the Jackie French book as a bonus. And that I’d replaced Angel of Storms with something, but I did read five extra books total so I guess I did, in a way – it just wasn’t a planned thing.

Either way, I’m very grateful for the month and I may have to do it again before Aurealis is over!
